 I think the Tempo engines were at the very end of the run. Mine is #385 and was still a VW diesel unit but the heavy duty leaf spring rear suspension and not the VW Dasher spring set up.

Is that a Ford Tempo diesel? In 1984 & 1985, Ford offered a diesel option for 
the Ford Escort & Tempo along with their Mercury Lynx & Topaz clones. The actual 
engine was the Mazda 626  2.0 diesel engine & 5 speed transmission. I owned a 
1985 Mazda 626 diesel bought new until 1996 when the engine blew-overheated at 
174,000 miles. That never would have happened if I had a discussion group like 
this. Was caused by a thermostat bypass hose that blew & was so hidden that I 
never saw it. Would have replaced it along with the other hoses. None of the 
Ford or Mazda dealers knew anything about that bypass hose when I asked for a 
complete set of hoses to replace them a few years earlier which I did as 
preventative maintenance.
