The way to tell worn shaft bushings is to move the sprocket/shaft back and
forth between the direction the belt is pushing the sprocket and opposite
that direction and look for excessive movement. While worn shaft bushings
can cause the belt to track incorrectly and can cause the seal to leak, the
poor belt tracking is often caused by incorrect alignment of the pump
mounting bracket and seal leakage is often simply because the seal is old
and worn out. Certainly either situation is a good cause for checking the
bushing play, but IMO, neither belt tracking nor seal leakage are
indications of worn out shaft bushings. I have seen far more cases of
incorrect tracking and seal leakage with pumps that had perfectly fine
shaft bushings than ones whose bushings were worn out.
