The replacement starter from Bosch solved the problem, of course.

Oddly, when I got the starter, it was the OLD MONSTER kind, not the new smaller motor kind I had gotten to replace the starter some 8 years ago.
SR28X.  I guess you get what you get, they are both considered to be the SR28X Bosch reman. starter.
SR28X must be in reference to the part that goes into the bell housing to engage the fly wheel.  you can get a small light weight (what I liked) or the big old clunker for a rebuild.  the small one is like 15 lbs and big old one is like 35 lbs.
I could barley muscle it in the spot on top of the trans from below.

The garage I took the original starter to gave me $30 back of my $65.  Better then nothing I guess, it was hard to argue because the thing did work on the bench.

I may as well hook up the starter relay to bypass the power from going trough the ing. switch while I am doing all of this farting around back there as well, I have it on the shelf.

The motor started on 1/2 a crank, all is well.
