Sounds like one of the vanes let go. Possible that there might have been a
load of soot and carbon on the vanes causing stress???? Don't know. But for
it to let go like that either the vanes on either the intake or exhaust
developed a crack and just shelled out the rest of the turbo.

Subject: [Vwdiesel] Turbo grenaded - BEW engine

04 Jetta, 155k miles. Pieces of turbo housing all over the top side of the
bottom belly cover. Trailered it to a mechanic I trust...
No warning signs that I detected. I was accelerating away after a red
light, not particularly fast, felt a bang, lost power immediately. Coasted
down a hill and into my parking lot at work.
Anyone seen this before? Mechanic thus far doesn't have an explanation
either. He thinks maybe a vane just came apart for whatever reason.
Anything else I should make sure he checks either as a precurser, or
aftershock? He said he will check / clean the intercooler for pieces.
There was no sign of increasing pressure, like the waste gate might be
stuck, but other than knowing, that would be a moot point now.
I bought the car with 115k on it, so don't know the history before that.
Since then, correct oil, regular changes of all filters.
I would have tackled this myself, but this is my "good" car, so I can't
afford much downtime... Bummer.
