[Vwdiesel] CV joint question

Do they make any noise when you make sharp turns?  That is odd that they
would clack backing up and not at any other time.

I have a 2002 TDI Jetta which is new to me with 165K.  The CV joints clack
when it is backing up, but not going forward.  Furthermore, I cannot detect
them clacking when downshifting, using the engine to break.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I figure I'll probably replace both half-shafts, but was curious about
others' experiences.
