Or at least you would see the issue if they are worn oddly.  this does require time and not that hard to do, a bit messy, but you can do it.
Time is always the issue.
Get some new boots for like 2 or 3 bucks from Autohaus AZ if you are going to go that route as that is the time to swap the boots.

I've had that happen when they are getting just a bit dry.  If you would
take them apart and regrease them they would be fine most likely. 
It's interesting to see how little grease they actually use now.

I have a 2002 TDI Jetta which is new to me with 165K.  The CV joints clack
when it is backing up, but not going forward.  Furthermore, I cannot detect
them clacking when downshifting, using the engine to break.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I figure I'll probably replace both half-shafts, but was curious about
others' experiences.
