The most entertaining part
as pouring 8L of water in and watching it run out the tailpipe!
Had that happen when I put my niece's diesel Rabbit back together. Had to pull the head back off
and find another. Didn't suspect it'd be cracked wide open!
Forgot about the time the head blew up on the pickup. Right at the top of Blewett Pass. No cell service but
there happened to be a repairman at the phone building up there. He had THREE phones with service! He let
me call Dad for a tow.
Another time I was coming back from Seattle in my '83 GMC, 6.2 Van. At the offramp from Hwy 18 I shut it
off for some reason and it didn't have enough cranking to start. Oh, I remember. It slowed down and died.
FIgured it was a plugged fuel filter. A patrolman stopped finally. I needed about 5 minutes of charging and
then the combined battery power to start. He INSISTED we use this new fangled jumpstart box he had. By
the time he was done insisting, the van wouldn't hardly crank over and he relented to use the jumper cables.
He kept telling me to try it and I said NO, we did it his way until my batteries were dead, now we'll do it my
way so it'll start!
Finally got on my way and in North Bend it happened again so I managed to limp to a body shop where
some guys were working late. Spent the night in the van. Next day I walked to the parts store, put on a
new filter and was off. Made it part way up Blewett and it died again! Walked a mile back to a phone and
waited for my wife to bring the pickup and a chain. She brought the car. :-( It turned out some rust came
from the downstream side, inside the filter, went through the pump and blocked the check valve coming out
of the pump. Pressure build, fuel goes down, it dies. It was hard to find someone who could diagnose that
back then!
