Stranded stories two different times..same 1958 VW Bus double door
converted to a weekender setup.
1970- I volunteered my rig to take all my sister's wedding gifts and
half her wardrobe to her new brides home in Omak WA...from Seattle..over
the Cascade mountain.s Young and dumb i reckoned..."If there's room ,
throw it on board.." At the top of Blewett Pass..I know why they call it
that name..I never considered the weight factor with an air-cooled 40
hp. Overheated the beleaguered beast and blew a rod and coasted down the
other side of the mountain. Fortunately got towed from Wenatchee, 60
miles to the farm in Omak at 2:30am where my NEW brother in law
eventually rebuilt the engine in an old chicken coop turned workshop.
That engine lasted two years.

2nd time 1972 in I was heading across to go to school at WSU Eastern
Washington driving too fast on a hot day on a flat straight stretch...
you guessed it..burned that engine up... got stuck in Othello for 12
hours and dear old dad brought his dodge cornet over and towed me back
to Seattle and that was the end of my school for that year and my short
lived era of air-cooled bus ownership for the first time...Sold it and
drove a Ford for the next ten years....

Now I drive VW diesels and thanks to folks on this fine forum I am a
paranoid oil checker but still having fun with a 82 1.9 n/a Westy
(expertly rebuilt by Scott Foss)
I agree with the statement "Owning VW diesels.... beyond an addiction
with no cure"
