Exactly my point why I would NOT go to a dealer with a 15 year old car.
(well, I wouldn't go there with a brand NEW car, never mind one that
old). There isn't likely anyone there who has worked on one
in...say...15 years. That is why there are independant service
providers out there - to deal with cars that nobody in his right mind
will take to a dealer because they want them to run without the newbie
there doing HIS learning at dealer rates and your expense.
Yeah, that's right, the guy with all of the experience is going to be
diddling with the McLaren or AMG, not the ancient beater (unless, of
course, it is a 300SL or better - and THOSE sure as hell don't go to a
dealer!). But, as I said, find a GOOD one - that specializes in your
car.
I have been repairing computer controlled engines for 43 years, and
short of a spate of resistors on the earliest Type III D Jetronic that
burned out (we simply pullted the PCB and soldered in new resistors
from Radio Shack) I have only seen ONE computer actuall fail (DDEC II
at 900,000++ miles). There is NOTHING that M-B diagnostic software
can tell you that Auto Inginuity aftermarket won't (yes, does ALL
OEM-specific codes, data logging, tests, etc.). 99.9% likely the
problem is within the car, not the ECU. Sadly, 15 years back, the ECU
may not be all that good at telling you what is actually failing or has
failed in the car.
