Hi Travis and all here, I use one as my daily driver. It's a 1985 1.6 diesel 5 speed. I did a waste veggie system in it as well. I don't have firm numbers on mileage but it is in the mid 50 mpg area. I never really filled it up to check accurately. I have had it since 2005.
Parts are easy, the engine, tranny, suspension, steering column and switches are all VW pickup parts and the body, lights, wipers, glass, etc..... are all off the shelf Grumman Kurbside parts still available from places like Mill Supply. I look at it as almost a permanent vehicle.
I do have other nice cars but every time I drive this one there is always someone with questions or offers to buy it. Quite an attention getter. But I will never sell it. I can carry almost anything in it even 10' pipe if need be.
Grumman made about 500 of them, with diesel, gas and electric engines, 4 or 5 speed manual and automatics. Body wise there are two sizes a 70 and 100 model and a high or low cargo floor. Mine is a 100 low floor version.
So far the most difficult thing is doing a timing belt, really tight quarters on the side only everything else is wide open and comfortable to service.
Terry

Haven't really seen much discussed on the kubvans that they put a VW drive train
in. Open discussion here. Anyone have one? Average MPG with it? Any issues with
them other then the limited numbers made so lack of body parts (that aren't VW).
