My '00 Jetta key is busted.  I only have one.  It still works, but it's broken in several ways.  I'm trying to sort out how to get hooked up with a new one.  I found someone selling the VagTacho software to extract the SKC which I didn't get with the car when I bought it used.  The $60 for the software equals the charge from the dealer to get one key matched so I figure that's a buy, unless someone near Dallas has a copy of the software already.  If not, someone will soon....  

Same guy can cut the physical keys for a reasonably high price.  My question is, I have another used key from a different car.  I'd thought that if i could get a blade cut for this key, I could use the code and VAG-COM to mate the key to the car and have a fully functioning key.  I'm being told now that they chip in the key is a write-once chip and that part of the key is basically trash.  I can buy the whole works aftermarket on eBay pretty cheap, but the key I already have happens to be free.  

Thoughts?  I checked on TDIClub and saw mainly, "There's tons of threads on this, check the old posts."  Problem, all of the many posts say to check the old posts.  Too meta for me.
