[Vwdiesel] oil squirters

Loren, do you remember what the difference under load was between coolant
and oil temps, and how high the oil temp would eventually go? Just curious
as to how well the cooler works.

I did the modification to the Dasher, which has an oil temp gauge. The
way I was able to
determine that they "worked" was I noticed that the oil temp would start to
rise, under load,
on a piece of road where it didn't before. It was obviously picking up more
heat. How well it
did or how necessary it is, I really don't know but there's my "scientific
proof." :-)

Really, if you get oil anywhere near the bore and it splashes on the
crankshaft, under 2000rpm-ish you get a bit of windage, but it should fling
just as much in the vicinity of the piston as anything, and accomplish what
you're after because of all the air whooshing around in there. At rpm, I
don't think piston cooling jets do so much squirting a jet of oil at the
piston underside as act as an aerosol to get droplets of oil in the air- a
turbulent suspension that eventually gets splattered onto the piston as the
air on the piston underside pumps back and forth from bore to bore. Having
looked at the bottoms of td pistons, they don't look very directly cooled,
piston cooling jets or no. They look very blue, baked, coked oil, but not
overly cooled to any great extent... Not to say the piston cooling jets do
NOTHING, probably carry more heat away from the piston skirt than the
underside of the piston.

Depends...
If you have a newer block, with bosses for the squirters then I suppose
you could. It'd involve facing, drilling, probably reaming and then
drilling and tapping the mounting bolt holes. If the bosses aren't there,
there isn't enough meat to do it. I'd intended to do just that but there
wasn't enough material to install any so I did something that works just as
well but requires a bigger oil pump.
I drilled angled holes from 4 of the main bearing saddles. I aimed for
the middle of the piston when it was about mid travel. I drilled most of
the way with about a 1/8" or slightly larger, bit.
Then I finished the last 3/8" of the hole with the same size as the oil
squirters have. Don't remember what that is now. I tested them with a
garden hose while washing out all of any metal filings. I was quite happy
with the results. If they didn't work then all I had to do was not drill
oil access holes in the bearing shell, that would provide oil to the
"squirters."

Can oil squirters be installed on a NA block if the corresponding space on
he NA block is faced off to allow for the squirters to be installed like hey
are on the turbo block?
