Currently have my eye on the new Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel as we need a tow vehicle. The 82 Jetta GTD project will be my daily driver and should get 45+ mpg due to the light weight of the car. Hayden

I made a trip down to the only yard I know that has any MK1s knowing he had an 83 that was pretty intact, pulled the rear brake assemblies and associated hardware (emergency brake cables and a couple of hard lines) and headed home with my wallet $35 lighter. Stopped at the local Orielly's auto parts and picked up some wheel cylinders and new brake shoes then went home and started the deconstruction. Managed to get the passenger side done before I ran out of energy and light. So back at it after lunch today. Well my mechanic son comes over and decides to watch me work (he seems to be good at that) as I removed the driver's side Scirocco stuff. As I am pulling things off, he wanders out of the garage with the passenger side Scirocco caliper and says, quite casually, "this is the drivers side caliper". If you installed this on the passenger side then it would be upside down and you would never be able to bleed the system!!!!!!!!!!! I only pounded my head on the car two or three times but not enough to cause a dent either in my head or in the car. I think that ranks about a 9/10 on my relative stupidity scale. Apparently there are words on the calipers that you should be able to read right side up when they are on the car!!!!!!!! Oh well, car has new drum brakes, brakes bled, the pedal has pressure and the car stops like it is supposed to. Just goes to show that if you live long enough, you can really make a fool of yourself!!!!!!! Oh well, I can now get a paper tag for the car, finish up some things on the inside and get it aligned and inspected. Anyone else want to share a story of absolute stupidity so I don't feel so all alone? :^P
