[Vwdiesel] odometer stopped working

Well, I got the cluster out and looked it over to find that the red gear
which runs off the shaft gear that runs off the main worm drive gear was
shifted over and not touching the shaft gear. It had some friction to it
when I pushed it back over so it isn't like it is really loose. Maybe just
one of those things with all the miles on it that it moved over to the point
that it no longer made contact. I was able to function check it with a
drill to make sure it worked before I put it in. As we would say in the Air
Force NDN, (no defects noted)
All in all it took me 45 minutes total from start to finish. Not as bad as
I was scared it would be. The link that Ken1 posted was informative. Just
glad that the speed cable was just a snap connection to the back of the
cluster and not threaded. My big hands had a rough time as it was getting
off and on, even with slacking the cable from the transmission.
Thanks for all the help. I don't post much, more of a lurker since I don't
have to many issues and experience like most of you.
Nick

Few tips on my page as well:
http://www.4crawler.com/Diesel/CheapTricks/Odometer.shtml#Repair
Biggest ones are to ream out the hole in the gear to relieve the press fit
stress then use a proper plastic glue. Also I think some folks have also
wrapped the gear hub in fine wire.

removal, due to fact that it had an adapter on the clolumn for a large hole
wheel, then the speedo cable was a pain.
