[Vwdiesel] GTD Spec

Sorry for the confusion. It was the span OF the [dial]gauge was 3mm [suggested], and apreload of 2.5mm. Just gone back and rechecked that nonsense }80D...
OK I was indeed correct!

Remember preload is where you take your gauge and then push against the natural stop of the gauge until the needle is operating inside its range.
Gauge face is then rotated to read zero.
Finger off then gauge effectively reads negatively.

If gauge was then inserted into pump when car at TDC to read about zero, then backing up the engine until the gauge stops moving will ensure that you are reading the true zero cam lift, and not out of the range of the dial gauge finger.
Then re-zero the gauge's face and then return engine to TDC and read off the timing.

The book suggests recreating another 1mm preload at the zero point, but I cannot see the reason for this, even if your gauge is non linear! Perhaps it's to protect gauge at other end if you are measuring cam height.
Better to use a gauge with a 5mm+ range.

"Span" is a a word I use for range. It is because I used t obe an instrumentation engineer andused to callibrate gauges using span and zero adjustment... clearly something stuck

What pump ever had a timing spec of 2.5mm ?????? I do not know what a span gauge is, ?? that could be the issue, Thanks, very informative stuff.Bryan Belman, Pt. Pleasant, NJ

Subject: [Vwdiesel] GTD Spec

The intercooled RA/SB setup used in both the GTD and the Mk3 Passat (The 'Jelly[o] Mold') for about 2 years.1989-1991 . Info is scant, despite Haynes books for this period covering diesel, they continued to pretend that the 1.6TD didn't exist, and only covered the 1.9 when it arrived! As for handbooks for the GTD, the one that came with the car does not mention it by name, but does give some data for the charge air cooled 59kw Diesel.

The book was printed in August 1990 "Golf Englisch" on the spine.
Some performance data:
1.6TD :51kw at 4500rpm 0 to 60mph 9.4sec. 4.3, 6.1, 6.3 litres per 100km for cruising @90, 120, and urban km/h
1.6GTD :59kw at 4500rpm o to 60mph 8.5sec. 4.4, 6.2, 6.3 litres per 100km for cruising @90, 120, and urban km/h

Timing:
Naturally handbook says nothing. I do have a booklet from VAG for the Passat mk3 Titled Diesel Injection and Glowplug Systems 1988 on. It is for the RA engine which was available for about a year. A complete bloody let down...

All sections point to the specs for timing in the central section on using the dial gauge. The usual pe loading connundrum of 2.5mm on a suggested 3mm span gauge, and then it says as per the spec in it's own paragraph which it forgot to mention...
All is not lost though because there is a bulletin from mid 1989 inserted in the back which states all 'RA' engined vehicles will now use the SB engine, which is identical in all aspects except for the pump now being "Load dependant injection TIMING, LDIT"; to comply with exhaust gas regulations Appendix 23. (Whatever that is!)

New injection timing test 0.83...0.97, set to 0.9mm

>From this I suppose it was a Nox issue and so old timing may have been similar to the TD's ...
1mm in the Americas, but 0.95mm as of 1984's VAG 1.6TD repair manual as issued from Germany...

OfficialTiming is not all that useful, as far better to tune by ear and adjust for foot style.

Not on the GTD site at the moment as 'Theman' blocked, probably undemocratically, because he couldn't cope with my innovation. Useful in these austere times.
My $22 rebuild just yesterday returned 61.4mpg, more than 2 years after the rebuild, burns no oil, and unlike his 'properly' honed engine using the 'real' tool, has not 'grenaded'. Book figure for interstate only 57mpg!

Perhaps someone could speak to Redrotors on my behalf, as I'm not able to PM him...'

Mark, glad to hear that you are alive and well, just disconnected from the inter web!!! I have tried a number of times over the last month or so to get in touch with you but obviously those emails (sent from this list, the GTD list and others) simply disappeared in to that huge back log of emails. First as to the exhaust, I prefer the sound from a slash cut pipe or a downturned pipe. Gives more of a rumble sound. It would seem to me that a flared or squished pipe may lead to a whistle like sound. Second, I have purchased and installed in an 82 Jetta, a European sourced '91 GTD engine. This is code SB with the water cooled turbo and an intercooler. What I have been trying to find is some specific information on this engine pertaining to the turbo and to the injection timing. I tried to order one from Germany but apparently it disappeared into the Atlantic on the way over. Do you have access to that information or do you know someone who does, say a manual? Even some scanned pages would be great. Any help would be appreciated. Either way, welcome back. Hayden
