Well, when my son pressed out the old bearings, he discovered that the
actual grinding was being made as the spindle on the drivers side was
actually spinning in the bearing rather than turning with the bearing!!!!
Ouch!  The spindle was in really bad shape so it  had to be replaced.  I got
back this afternoon from west Texas and put them back on the Jetta.  A quick
drive to do the grocery shopping confirmed that all bad sounds from the
front end are now gone.   That is a big relief since I need to take the car
down to Austin for a meeting early next month.  Now the car has a full set
of new bearings front and back.
Speaking of trips, I wanted to give everyone some new data on the Jeep Grand
Cherokee Ecodiesel.  Mpg has been staying in the 27-28 mpg range for most of
the time but today, I managed 31.3 mpg calculated.  That was very close to
the car's computer estimate of 31.6.  It looks as if the computer is
"learning" the car's abilities as the last two tanks have had a close
agreement between the calculated and the car's estimate.  Hayden
