[Vwdiesel] off topic, but diesel

I would second the special cast iron arc welding rod - with preheat and
afterheat.
Dad had a big Craftsman vise that a friend of his broke the fixed jaw off
near the base by having the jaws open too far and beating on whatever it
was they were working on. Another friend of his turned him on to the rod -
as I recall it had blue flux and a high Nickel content but I don't know any
of the specs. He disassembled the vise, ground out a good V where it was
broken, and brought it up to the house and into the oven which was cranked
up as far as it would go. Once it was thoroughly heated, they carried it
back down to the shop in some old towels, welded it in multiple passes, and
immediately wrapped it and brought it right back to the house and into the
oven which was still up as far as it would go. As I recall he turned down
the temp by 50 degrees every hour or so until it was off then let it sit in
the oven overnight to cool slowly. This was when I was a kid, and once I
got older I remember using and probably abusing that vise many times and it
never broke again.
I also recall Mom was less than pleased with that stinky, greasy chunk of
metal in her oven, but she got over it. :-)
