Bud, that new car you got has over 500K miles on it, it sure does look good for that many miles.
I would start of with a compression check??
Wow, that is a lot of miles but that engine is rock solid.
I am sure it has solid lifters with shims for adjusting valves.

Success! Thanks all..also cracked the injector lines one at a time and 
turned the car over until a little diesel was detected...started right 
up...now on to the VAG for fine tuning on timing.
