[Vwdiesel] Injection pump timing?

Well, that's pretty much what I was thinking but temps (coolant, intake and fuel) all seem to be reasonably close. I was expecting to see one way off but I didn't find any that were. Not sure how to log on. I have a "smart cable" thanks to a list member, and it just connects. I was having a "data has been altered" error and it wouldn't let me clear errors even. Put the factory chips back in, presuming a glitch on the performance chips, from the previous ECU frying. I can clear codes but still can't get into the adaptation. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong or there's just a problem.
It runs like it should when the "correction" gets disabled. I struck me that I never changed anything when I put this ECU in, so it's probably timed for the engine it came off of. Mine happened to time darn close to perfect when I put the new belt on.

Loren, sounds to me like the Passat has an issue with one of its temp sensors.
When you go into Basic Settings, it disables the dynamic timing adjustment and you're running the "mechanical" timing, i.e. it's injecting according to how it's physically timed by the setting of the pulley/belt.
If it's running better *without* the ECU "fixing" the timing, the ECU must think it's much warmer than it really is (either fuel, coolant or intake air temp).
It's been a while since I used my VagCom but IIRC the adaptation problem means you're not logged in to the ECU correctly?

Heh! I have several smoking-when-cold diesels and I figure the problem is retarded timing. Dad said one day, he didn't know which smoked worse; the stove (starting up) or the Tractor!! (a SAME, pronounced sah-may)
The passat is really bad but clears up when it warms up. Temp sensors all show relatively correct (didn't check if EXACT). If I go to "basic settings" when I get to 004, the idle smooths out, speeds up, sounds much better and the timing goes from barely BTDC to about 8 degrees BTDC. If I go to adaptation, all chanels come up as not available! Ugh. Beginning to hate the electronic part of the TDI.
Replaced the top rad hose-to-head, flange yesterday. No cracks but it'd been leaking. Appeared to just be the o-ring but replaced the whole thing BEFORE it cracked.

Here is a modification I recommend for the AAZ pump. There is a timing
etard solenoid on the front of the pump. Wire it to be powered full time
ith the fuel shut off switch. Then re-time it as you would a 1.6TD. I
eem to recall .95 working well. That solenoid retards fuel timing below
000 rpm for emissions. It also reduces performance.
