Yeap, they are impossible to clean. All those inner layers and passageways.
for $16, just get a new one if it bothers you that much. You may be able to find cheaper.

I do like a clean engine bay when I get the time to clean it up.
Just did the Timing belt swap and all on the 04 Golf, man was that a dirty engine bay, all clean now, but it takes hours you need to really pull stuff apart.

I would think if you put some lacquer thinner in it and swished it around it
should clean it up. I never got mine clean and didn't try the thinner, just
now thought of it. I did try straight simple green and it didn't do much for
it. I agree though for the price a new one would be the way to go.
