Head gaskets can leak externally but it's pretty rare. It's usually between cylinders and into close neighboring water jacket passage holes or else the oil passage near cylinder number 3. That one is more prone to external leakage than any of the water.
Look closely then look closely again. Most likely causes would be a slight weep around a hose connection or else one of the head flanges, moreso if you have the plastic flanges. The water could easly be a very slow leak, bulds up on a ledge, from movement, then drip on the floor with little evidence where it originated from. Gotta look really closely for any crusting, color from your antifreeze or a cleaner trail.

Subject: [Vwdiesel] Coolant leak

I have a coolant leak that seems intermittent but will lower the
eservoir level over a few days and leave a few spots on the garage
loor. I have checked all the hoses and the water pump and cannot find
ny traces of antifreeze on them.I thought I had found the leak when I
ound coolant on the heater control valve. I changed the valve and the
eak seemed to be cured but reappeared after a few days. Is this type
f leak indicative of a head gasket issue? I would expect to see black
pots in the reservoir if my head gasket as leaking. Can I have a head
asket leak to the outside that doesn't show up in the coolant
eservoir? If the head gasket can leak like this, are there any
referred locations where the leak is most likely to occur? The motor is
turbo motor with turbocharger installed in a 81 Caddy.
