Been awhile since I posted. Besides being overworked (huge teaching load last semester and this one also), I have also been sick with bronchitis for about 4 weeks, finally getting over that. Anyway, I finally got a battery into the 82 Jetta GTD project today. I quickly realized that I wasn't getting a glow cycle (I have that fixed now but not the indicator light on the cluster) so I simply cranked until it started. It took about 5 attempts but the engine roared to life with hardly a bit of smoke. In fact, I had forgotten to pull out the cold start cable but it started right up. I let it run to make sure everything was functioning properly, oil pressure light worked, fan cycled, tach operated properly, and everything on the rewired cluster (from a Mk II) worked properly also. I tried out most of the other systems as well, blower fan is missing top speed so it needs a resistor pack. Turn signals don't work, either with the stalk or with the emergency flasher switch. I tried 2 different turn signal relays and both simply make a buzzing noise when the emergency flasher is turned on but the lights do not flash. I also discovered that I have no rear tail lights, turn signals, backup lights or license plate lights. Interestingly enough, the trunk light does work!! I also need to make some adjustments on the exhaust as it knocks against the underside of the body during idle. I need to bleed the brakes and get a few minor seals (the speedo cable into the trans one seems to be the most important). Then I need to finish the installation of my gauges. Bit by bit the beast is coming back to life. BTW for those that don't know this, the engine is from Quality German parts in California and is an European SB engine code, GTD Golf engine with a water-cooled turbo, high flow injectors and a tweaked injection pump. It came with an intercooler and I have added one where the battery should be (battery now in trunk) and was rated at 80 HP at 4500 rpms. I can finally see the end of the tunnel on this project and can start work on my 68 beetle again. Hayden
