Shalyn:

You need to put some time in over at Fred's website.

The realiability issues of the post-ALH cars seem to be behind us.
One of the problems with being a leader is the associated risk.  As
a very good friend of mine always would say:  "you can tell the
pioneers by the arrows in their backs".  Cam life of PD (IMHO, ANY
unit injector was dead end technology anyhow) and HPFP life on CRs are
matters for used cars.  I would not get too excited over the
"de-contenting" since if they want a Variant (wagon), they get the
"real deal" IIRC.

An automatic trans is no longer offered.  You get the DSG - which is
technically far more interesting.  Our eldest daughter has a TFSI
Passat Variant with DSG, and I can tell you it is a REALLY nice
gearbox.  To the uninformed, can not be differentiated from a torque
converter slushbox, but if you are very aware of what you are driving a
FASCINATING gearbox that works extremely well.  Again, its early
teething problems behind us.

As I said, these (and carbon fouling on direct injectin gassers) are
all a result of leading the way for the rest of the world.
Personally, I would rather support the innovator that the free-ride
crowd on VWs coat tails any day.
