[Vwdiesel] Cold start lever?

I've seen it promoted by a well-known pump builder that he believes that
leaving the cold start lever out can cause the pin in the end of the timing
piston to be loosened as the pin taps into the cold start cam every time
the engine returns to idle. Once the pin is loosened the pump can be
fairly completely wrecked as the advance bore is marred and bits of metal
enter the rest of the pump. Personally I don't subscribe to that theory.
I believe that the pin in the end of the timing piston is more likely to
be loosened by the side loads on it when the lever is pulled while the
engine is not running. Regardless, the best course of action is to *pull
the lever just before shutting down the engine* while the internal pressure
is still pushing the piston away from the pin and then you can push it in
after the following cold start once the engine is running smoothly.
