Hi James and the list;
I don't know how long it will last but I have a completely rebuilt
1.6 Turbo in my 1990 VW Fox 2 door wagon. It has a 9Q tranny from a Quantum
1.6 turbo diesel. I have a 2.25 straight pipe exhaust and a Snow Performance
water/methanol injection system. I have a pyro mounted just as close post
turbo as possible. I never run steady over 900 degrees and never let it
touch 1000. This combo runs hard. It weighs 2600 lbs with me and fuel. At 75
on the freeway there is a definite surge of power when you put your foot in
it. As for mileage contact me personally and I will let you in on a real
economy secret that few know about.

I would be a tad concerned about weight with the TD too Ray. I knew a
German guy that was a salesman for a medical company in western Canada that
put a bazillion miles on, and was a VW diehard. Did rounders from Calgary to
Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, and back to Calgary. In the early 90's he
killed a few td's in Passats and finally gave up and bought a benz, said the
td Passat was like driving a Westy. The wagon may be less spirited than
some may desire... but go for it. If you can find a 97 Passat with the 1Z
tdi, I would highly recommend one. With mild tuning box, my wife's was
getting 60mpg imperial routinely in her daily drive to work, good car, but
it got hit. That series of Passat would not disappoint from the power AND
economy perspective.
