I have had one thing fall into the timing belt area. I assume it was one of the top valve cover nuts as I had lost one and couldn't find where it landed. Well around 100 miles later I was driving along and the thing started sputtering and spitting the smoke out with little power. Person behind me happened to be my roomate (summer interns). Had my wife then bring me back with the tools and found it had jumped timing. I reset it but couldn't figure out why it did that. Fixed it roadside. Then-with the cover off (cover was on when the nut fell in but I left cover off for a while after this) I saw the belt had a hole in it. I replaced the belt and still have the section. I assume it was the nut that caused it to jump timing but there was a lot of pee-gravel in the area as well. Either way I like to keep the cover on.

Other case-on my 1.9 aaz I noticed the reving was kind of weird. I was looking around and there was enough gap on the top timing belt cover with what I had done to make it work. I then saw my belt wasn't tracking and it was getting eaten away. Upon further looking the IP brace is held on by 3 bolts. Two near the belt and one further away. The further away one was missing and the other two were loose so the IP was rocking causing the rev issue and eating the belt. Window woun't be a bad idea. But there really shouldn't be a tracking issue unless something else is up.
