[Vwdiesel] I have an odd question

Don't have  an answer except I have a guess re the "grill" on the '70s Super Beatle which was air cooled. I don't know if factory or dealer installed A/C was an option but if it was that is probably where they would probably install an A/C condenser using an electric motor, as is the case with my 1972 Citroen DJS 21 station wagon which has two such units, one under each fender which was done to avoid having a condensor dumping extra heat into the radiator which was common on most water cooled cars
