[Vwdiesel] Loose Boost Pipe

Yesterday when I romped on the accelerator as a little joke, it blew one of the pipes off!  It was the connection at the bottom of the fender, the pipe from the turbo to the intercooler.  The connection with the spring clip that holds it together.  
 
I had very little power and was blowing a lot of smoke but made it to the destination where I pushed the connection together hoping it would hold.
 
Unfortunately, it came open again, though the two parts of the pipes were pushed together for the ride home, insted of being wide open.  So there was some positive pressure to the manifold, with a gigantic leak.  
 
I put it back together this morning and the drive to work was OK.  Just wondering if that clip connection is a known weak spot, or if I should assume that I might not have gotten the clip 100% on when I replaced the alternator pulley a couple months ago and spirited driving with a high load caused the boost to finally go high enough to push it apart?
