Cheap way to make an evac pump is nab an old refrigerator compressor, put a clamp-on refrigeration valve on the inlet side and suck away! I put valves on both sides so I can use it as a reclamation pump as well. Currently have a couple cans of 134a in the freezer that I pulled out of the Passat when I changed the expansion valve. :-) (freezer will keep the pressure low in event of any slight leaks).

I have probably done between 12 and 14 compressors over the last 6 years,
n my cars and others. I would go with the lower cost compressor, replace
he filter, make certain you have the right amount of oil, and if you
an evac the system over night. Shalyn, if you have a compressor, I can
hip you my venturi vac pump. You will need gauges, though. Getting
he 134a in 30# cylinders is probably the most cost effective way to
o. Gee, I think I have three R-12 30# cylinders I should probably
ook for a new home for.
