[Vwdiesel] TDI CCV leaks

I've been really busy for the last while and haven't paid any mind to the oil coating the skid plate or the 1 qt/5000 mi. oil consumption. I did, however have to notice when the oil dissolved the shroud that covers the passenger inside CV boot to protect it from the exhaust. Once it softened, bolt holes worked too large and let it ride down on the CV boot and wore it down like it was on a lathe.
So, I was forced to stop and pay attention to where the oil was coming from. I seem to have oil dripping from where the CCV puck goes into the intake. I also have oil drops on the turbo intake side. These both tell me that I have oil coming up the vent and wandering the intake. I don't really know what all the CCV is actually for, but as I understand it, it lets the vaporized oil mist escape the block, correct? I guess it shouldn't be a surprise with over 330,000 mi that there should be some oil-rich blowby.
The reading I've done so far indicates that there are some people installing various oil separators. Anyone have any experience with those?
Something else I was reading was talking about how vacuum leaks can cause excess oil vapors because the vacuum pump is constantly pulling air into the engine and thereby pushing oil vapors out. Judging by my brake behavior (repeatedly pressing the brakes requires more and more effort as my vacuum boost is lost), I do have a vacuum leak somewhere. Does that sound like a plausible connection?
