The answer is simple. Get a rope and tow it. When it starts and you have it
home and running then tune it. I once bought a Dasher Diesel for parts. The
owner said he stopped using it because it was so worn out it wouldn't hardly
start. It had sat in the weeds for about 8 years. I poured a gallon of
diesel in it and hooked a tow rope to it. About 3 miles down the road it
started. First on one cyl then the second, third, and fourth. I drove it the
rest of the way home. The engine was really worn out but I had just bought
it for the body. Most of the time after changing an injector pump I tow the
rig rather than waste a starter trying to purge the air.

Subject: [Vwdiesel] Hangars hillbilly diesel tuning
I am trying to get a 82 rabbit diesel running that sat around my garage. I
had to switch an engine and change out engine mounts so I Switched the
injection pumps and I am trying to get it started. My diesel timing gauge
isn't working right, it doesn't seem to move across the gauge as the plunger
is pushed in consistently, it sticks, sometimes turns sometimes doesn't. I
remember a description from years ago from Hagar for hillbilly tuning. I am
hoping to get the car started and take it to a local VW mechanic friend who
can time it proper. Does anyone have the description on how to do this.
Thanks,
Dave
