[Vwdiesel] I got started, but

My first thought was an air leak in the fuel system. Will let it drain down when sitting overnight and require cranking to get it started.
Most old diesel will still run well. If it tends to smoke, stink and start hard/run poorly then either put up with it and run it out or drain it. Just a couple gallons of that to a full tank of new fuel still won't run as well as a full tank of good stuff.
Indeed make sure the glow plugs are working. If so then check for places air can leak into the fuel lines (supply as well as return). If not, get them going and see what's next. :-)

Get the glow plugs working.

I've started a couple and let them burn up old diesel though. I think the
main thing would be the possiblity of algae growing, but some say that the
risk of this is actually much lower than a lot of people imagine.

The last Rabbit I resurrected after having sat (though not that long,
maybe a year total) I put a couple cans (so a heavy dose) of some kind of
diesel additive/cleaner stuff, probably Seafoam, along with topping the
 tank with good fuel.

It could be that it won't start because the glow plugs didn't run.
Especially with old fuel, it probably needs all the help it can get. Hook
the wire directly to the battery and see if it'll fire.

 Hi all,

A week or so ago I asked for Hagars no gauge tuning advice for an old
diesel Rabbit that I wanted to bring out of retirement. I got it started,
it idled nice, I took it for a little ride and then shut it off, and
started over and over again fine. The next day I tried starting it and it
didn't want to start again. I got it started that first time though, by
filling the pump with diesel purge and spraying wd40 in the intake.
The car sat for about 3 and a half years and the old fuel has just sat
in the tank all that time. I am wondering if that old fuel is the problem.
Do I have to drain it or is there an additive that I can add.

 Thanks,

 Dave
