[Vwdiesel] Never heard of

Sorry, first off:  it's neither VW nor Diesel, but that aside:

A co-worker grabbed me first thing a week ago and asked me to look at her car.  Some kind of KIA mini SUV.  Said it'd made a banging sound then drove crazy.  Fortunately, she was almost to work when it happened and idled it in.  I crawled underneath and found that what had happened was that the bottom loop/eye/what have you was broken off a front strut where it bolts to the control arm.  Rather explained the symptoms, but I have never heard of that happening.  She doesn't offroad the car or anything, no errant curb jumping, etc.  

Anyone heard of that?  The good news is that it happened when she was running slowly, not on the highway which she'd just exited.  I can't even begin to imagine what would have happened had it occurred at speed.
