[Vwdiesel] looking for gauges

On the front of the engine, directly below the coolant outlet to the
rad, where the head joins the block, there may be a small "bump" of
head gasket material protruding.
3/8" behind that there is a port from the block to the head, surrounded
by a rubber grommet, part of the gasket itself.
This is the gallery for the oil supply to the head for the cam, tappets,
and other moving parts requiring lubrication.
I have seen a few of these grommets deform causing oil leaks, usually
out to the front of the head/block joint.
The oil pressure there is lower than the bottom of the engine, so the
leak is less dramatic than if it were at the bottom.
If there is no oil in the coolant, you can keep driving for a while
unless you are offended by the mess.
If there is oil in the coolant, stop driving it until you can change the
gasket.
I some times think the grommet failure is caused by high oil pressure
seen with cold winter starts (Canada, eh?), I use a block heater, and
try not to over rev until thoroughly warmed up.
Winter happiness is bringing the block heater cord inside the house, and
havin a "control center" with a variac, to control the voltage, and ac
ammeter to monitor the amperage, all located just below the window with
the outdoor thermometer. Plans to automate it to keep an overnight low
warmer going, and step up to full power in am an hour before needing it.
Because I'm an old fart with "variable" schedule, have been managing it
manually so far.
