[Vwdiesel] Never cold!

Everybody speaks about thermostat, the antifreeze...... Modern cars simply
are designed for propulsion, their engines do have little reserves left for
heating. In my recent past, servicing not only VW community as a combustion
heater specialist, I had many very happy customers, getting into preheated
very warm cars, buses and driving in comfort at outside temperatures as low
as - 25F. On a parking lot only my cars had no snow on them and had crystal
clear glass. I never had problems opening the doors!
Wait for electric cars! Without heaters they will be iceboxes.

No, you are not being unreasonable at all. The ALH cars are HORRIBLE
for heat - worst thing since air cooled days
#1 for this reason is condition of thermostat. If it is working, car
will get to 90C or so - but it has to be DRIVEN to get there. We are
10mi from town, and on a cool day, car is just getting warm as it hits
the city. Drill is start, idle out of driveway onto street, three
blocks to highway and pedal to the metal.
On a COLD day, the engine makes so little head and rejects so much from
the block, oil pan, etc. that the temp guage NEVER gets anywhere near
the middle of the range. Especialy bad if you don;t have the lower
splash pan in place. As well, when winter comes, we put a full cover
over the grille and lower intakes and even then, it is hard to get up
to temp. This year, we can;t find it and it is FRIGGING COLD in that
darn car.
Conversely: warmest car I have ever driven: one of our last A2 TDs.

OK, I live about 15 miles south of Hayden and MY Diesel ('00 TDI) is
too cold. I know that since this is Texas, that statement is not
going to garner a lot of sympathy. I.e. from James. I do have a
question, though, before I start doing something drastic. Should the
car be making enough heat to get the cab reasonably warm if it's 20
degrees F outside? I have to admit to only rarely driving in those
temps here in Ft. Worth and don't have a good feel. I did look and
make sure my vent recirculation door closes. The car's old enough
that there's a black snow of insulation through the vents so I thought
that might be the problem. It's not. I felt the radiator hoses too
and the top one isn't warm, so I'm guessing the engine just isn't
getting warm enough to make heat. I'm thinking that this is just the
way it is and I can bundle even more, but if there's a way I can pick
up a little comfort, that'd be kind of awesome.
