Doug,
How thick does the shim have to be? Maybe you could use some nylon washers and split them
and force them onto the shaft?

I have the 81 Caddy instrument
cluster out and found that the glue on
the odometer drive gear had turned to powder and the gear
 was spinning
 freely on the shaft.
My trip odometer hasn't worked for a long time. The gear
 between the
odometer and the trip odometer seems OK but there seems to
 be a little
side-to-side play in the gears of the trip odometer. The
 trip odometer
seems to engage better when the gears are pushed to the side
 where the
drive gear is from the odometer. Is there a way to put a
 shim in the
side away from the drive gear to hold the trip odometer in
 closer
contact with the drive gear? I'd like to avoid removing the
 odometer or
the trip odometer from the plastic mounts that they are in.
