[Vwdiesel] Northern Ohio Roads Closed

For sure. I ran an 89td for years, best car I ever owned. Had to disconnect
the A/C compressor clutch in winter, and if below 20, slide a cardboard in
front of the rad to cover a minimum of 2/3 of the rad to get enough cabin
heat. Under -30, you don't really need a rad, the heater core does all you
need. Leaving 1/3 of the rad exposed is more than enough. Listen for the
fan cycling to be your guide for your particular car. At -40, you can close
the rad off completely. BTDT, but you have to pay attention to things.
Carry a gallon jug of kerosene with you if your fuel isn't up to the task
of staying fluid. Really sucks to have it cloud on the highway in the
middle of nowhere, and nothing really beats kerosene to fix it. I've used
all the additives to reverse clouding at one point of another, and kerosene
is still the best followed by a dose of Stanadyane to protect pump
lubrication.
Be cool, stay warm.

Doyt, that 89 would have started NO problem with a heater for the battery as
well as block heater.

At 4 degrees today, it took the Golf TDI a good 10 miles of 65mph to finally
get up to full operating temp.
It was a chilly ride, if I knew we were going to have another few days of
this I would block the front end with a rubber mat or something to stop the
air flow.
Started no issue, no anything on the motor, same short glow cycle, did not
even stumble.

I think today was our coldest day.  I think that I saw 11 degrees during the
"warm" part of the day but it has primarily been in the single digits.  I've
never been as excited for 40 degrees as I am right now-that is the weekend's
forecast.  Tomorrow's 33 will be downright balmy!

I had to replace the freaking starter in my Golf today.

I was so pissed because I replaced it in November prior to the first cold
snap specifically so that I wouldn't have to dick around with it in cold
weather.  So I got to replace a starter on the coldest day so far!
Thankfully I got my garage largely cleaned out last week while it was
warmer!!  So I was able to run the propane heater for a few minutes, bundle
up, and get it swapped without too much drama.  It really is fairly simple
on the Golf, or I'm well practiced.

The replacement rebuild starter seems to spin faster than the old one, so I
have hope it'll work properly.

It isn't as cold here in NC. Supposed to get down to 9 tonight. I'm curious
as to how the 91 jetta will start. So far no issues and I'm running 20w-50
in it AMSOIL synthetic right now.  I guess tomorrow will tell.
