[Vwdiesel] AC Clutch rattly

Well, the clutch died altogether today, and was the root cause of all the starting problems the other day, I think.

Today it didn't want to start (real slow cranking, etc) when leaving the parking lot for getting lunch.  Luckily a friend happened to come at about the same time, so we ran to my house to get my tester and cables.  Battery voltage was fine, but the car started immediately with the jumper cables providing a boost.

To my surprise, the battery light was on and there was no steering assist.  When I got home, I discovered the serp belt was broken!

So I checked, and the pulley will not turn at all by hand, though it did turn (tightly) when I put a wrench on the center nut.

I imagine that this was the problem the other day, but I got lucky and the clutch freed up before the serp belt broke.

Does this mean I need the outside part, the whole clutch assembly (electro magnet and bearing along with clutch), or the entire compressor?

Sorry... should type slower..
WHen ac off, rattles usually mean bearing.
When AC on, rattles are usually low freon, the pump valves rattle a bit.
You can change pieces, but the clutch is usually simpler to replace as a unit.
I've had ford ones apart, you have to set the end gap on the clutch.  Just a spanner pin wrench is required IIRC.

If it rattles when the ac is on, its the bearing that the pulley runs on when the clutch isn't clutching.

I have a noisy rattle when the engine is running that goes away when the AC is turned on.  So I figure some part of the clutch is getting old/worn.  It was particularly loud last night when the engine was very cold (though quieted to the "normal" level of rattle I'm used to after driving a bit).

Has anyone replaced all or part of the AC clutch?

I've seen the whole clutch assembly for sale (the bearing, electromagnet, etc)as well as just the part of the assembly that looks like the outside of the pulley system, the part that looks like the triangle with 3 arms coming off it.  It appears that part is relatively easy to replace, while the whole assembly is more involved.

What is the likely source of the rattle?
