hayden, thanks, yes i want a rubber valve cover gasket
gregm, thanks, they do offer uv oil additive indicators for oil, fuel, ac, coolant
it is going to warm a bit here in chicago and so i will clean the block/head area to better see where the oil is leaking, not really much of a seep though still a big concern.
it is a shame, the motor and car in general have been running very nicely and so i hate to think about swapping in a different motor or doing the head gasket.  
btw, i have a 93 passat wagon,i am going to sell. it was a v6, manual trans. i was going to drop in a 1.9td  I have. now, with limited space i will shelve that idea, i may just use this motor in my current passat wagon 1.6na with the potential leaky head.i have more details and pics on the project passat if there is any interest.
