thanks hayden and all
sounds easy enough, i may just eliminate the sender for the glow cycle as i have gone to a manual switch for this function. i have a sender for the cabrio temp gauge that i will pop in and see how the gauge functions first in the engine compartment before i run wires to the dash.
most of u have had these motors apart many more times than me, what is the collective thought on replacing a suspected leaking head gasket. there is a small seep of oil, ultraviolet sensitive additive is inconclusive, yes there is some small amount of oil near the blocks surface below injector 3 and 4 after some 75 miles of combined highway and 40 mph driving though this could come from other regional appliances: glow plug, injectors, a crank ventalation plate left of the vacumn pump. spraying wd 40 on the block while the engine is running did show some gas bubbles around the number 3 glow plug.
i feel i should monitor the leak, and operating condition and drive it until it more clearly shows itself. i do have an second motor that i want to put in as it is a turbo where as the above eng is an na. with swapping the motor out in mind, is it possible to remove the engine and leave the trans tied onto the axles yet moving the trans up or down as needed to slide the engine off the trans spline. just curious, i have seen my mechanic support the motor and drop out the trans though never have i seen removing the engine and leaving the trans.
thanks again for all your thoughts, ray in frozen chicago

On the outlet on the head (front side of the motor for you, towards the transmission) is where the two water temperature sensors (one for idiot gauge and one for glow plugs) are mounted in holes on either side. Remove then both, you will loose some coolant. I used a brass T mount with a small pipe extension (M10 x 1.0 thread with the extension on one end of the cross bar of the T) and screwed this tightly into the head making sure to position the T part where you can get to it and screw in the two stock connectors. This would be mounted on the side of the outlet closest to the intake and exhaust manifolds. I then mounted the sender for the actual gauge in the other hole. Done and did. hayden

> > i am a bit reluctant to do more than absolutely needed as i am having what looks to be the start of a head leak. using a uv oil additive i do see a small amount of oil below injectors three and four, where loren says this sort of leak occurs. the block does flatten at this point and oil could conceivably collect there from other causes and there is some small amount of splattering above the block/head connection though i sense the worse. that said i am going to continue driving this motor until it shows itself more clearly just no trips over say 20+ miles. continue to be vigilant in keeping coolant temps well monitored; so i am interested in how u mounted your sending units.

I have taken it on a couple of full throttle stomps and managed to pull almost 450 degrees C (840 F) so I think I will let it stay where it is for now and see how it affect the MPG. I had a full tank when I started this episode and it seems to be making a difference. I will let you guys know when I fill up again. I also developed a valve cover oil leak so I needed to fix that. For those of you that haven’t make this switch on your older engines (mine came from the factory with one) the rubber gasket is really the way to go. You do have to buy the kit the first time because it requires a different shouldered stud that is not on the early engines. Once you have that, if you ever need to replace the gasket because you messed it up like I did, they are available at almost every FLAPS just ask for a Golf, Jetta, Corrado, or even a passat valve cover gasket for a 2.0 gas engine. They were used from 93 to just recently so they are readily available. I also remounted my temperature senders from the front of the head outlet to the back (more room to screw in the T fitting), changed out the connector and now my idiot dash gauge and my real temperature gauge pretty well agree. It still seems to take a long time for the dash gauge to change but it now come up to just to the left of the warning light in the middle of the gauge. Car runs pretty steady at 90-93 degrees C on the gauge. Last little bit. It was 17 degrees F here again the other morning and once again the Jetta refused to start. I pulled the battery to have it tested and they said it was fine. Soooooo, since I had installed a really big battery box in the trunk for the battery, I traded in the stock battery for a series 27 which has 810 CCA and 10000 CA (apparently used in Dodge trucks) and put that it. Now the car starts on the first of second round. It is supposed to be in the low 20s Tuesday morning (after a high of 73 today) so It will get a good test then. I guess I shouldn’t complain about the temperatures here, I know some of you are barely making it into POSITIVE numbers. Hayden
