[Vwdiesel] UPDATE Re: Should I Re-Ring?

Well, I got the new Peloquin transmission in, drove it for a mile, then
proceeded to pull the head. Ugh.

I found significant exhaust valve marks on #1 and #2 pistons. I'm a
little ticked, since the machine shop said "ummmm, use the thickest head
gasket you have" I believe they knew it was a problem. Ah well, live
and learn. I'm surprised it didn't break the valves, as it's a good
1/8" deep, not just a light kiss like I've seen before.

I don't have the months and months it would take to redo this properly,
sooo...

* Head gasket looks good, Hmmm maybe running issues are more due to
valves??

** Almost no ridge on the cylinder top. Should I scrub it with a
kitchen scrubber to remove slight carbon buildup before pulling the
pistons? or just tap them through?

*** Do I need to hone If I'm putting the same rings back in?

**** Grant rings should be arriving today, but if the original
Kolbenschmidt ones gap okay should I keep them??

***** Bentley suggests 220 for the hone - in rack in a Westy, are the
balls sufficient? Just put a rag over the crank?

THANKS,

Will in Alaska.
