[Vwdiesel] Lusting after efficiency

Pardon if i missed this - did you try checking power/powering the solenoid
directly?

This sounds very similar to a known issue with earlier ALH TDIs... commonly
known as "relay 109", or the "load reduction relay".

There was a bad run of relays, and they would randomly crap out when hot.
 Cool down, worked fine again... for a while.

Is there a similar relay on your diesel?  Perhaps a similar electrical
problem on the fusebox side.
