[Vwdiesel] Cold Start 1... Hot Start 0

No particular air leak detected, and if there were when hot, then surely prime would be lost whilst hot, whereas leaving till cool or overnight results in instant,
or near instant start.
I can't quite rationalize the pump priming itself after any losses, whilst being stationary.

I do have a substitute pump, but it has been stood in my shed for maybe 10 years, and I don't want to introduce new, but different faults, although they may
be easier to cure :o)

OK, you say "that leaves fuel supply at start up" as a high
probability situation. Have you considered an air leak in your fuel
supply line, that is sucking bubbles of air into the pump, thus
diluting the volume of diesel fuel that reaches the cylinders? Doyt
