[Vwdiesel] TDi year recommendations + any in New England for sale?

hi all

my friend Jenny’s 2002 Jetta just died - she needs to trade up

two Qs:

- what are the best model years to look at?
I know the 2003s are the last year with the VE pump, so for an old one, pre-‘04
but what are the best late-model years?
my mom’s 2012 Golf seems pretty great so far

- also, does anyone know of a good one for sale?
she’d like either a Beetle or Golf, manual
and either old and cheap to tide her over for a couple years, or expensive and new-ish, to last a decade+

she is in New Haven, CT and Northampton, MA
