Since I tried it, I've had much better luck with welding than brazing cast. Not sure which rod I had but it's a Lincoln and dang it welds nice! You can heat, weld, then cool REALLY slowly or just dab, hammer, hammer, hammer then dab another spot, hammer, hammer (with your chipping hammer) and it works well without the heating/cooling fuss. I welded part of a tractor, wheel flange that way (way too much effort to drain, disassemble, replace sealss, etc so I tried it. Worked great! That was a grind a V and weld up instance rather than a hole but I think I'd weld it.

A piece of equipment that gets parked outside has rot through the exhaust
anifold of it's 23 hp engine. I was wondering if I could blast it clean,
nd then do something like shape a nickle or something to overlay the
ole and brase it in place. I would probably pre/post heat on a gas grill
ith a target of 300 to 500F.
Any thoughts? Oh, the engine is on a Ford 1510 tractor, which is a 3 cyl
A diesel. It is "young" with about 2200 hours on it. Starts OK, runs OK,
mokes a little under load, and has the original injectors.
If there is an alternative fixing methodology, I am open to it.
