[Vwdiesel] storage engine - prep/attempt to revive, soak with acetone/atf or?

I recall the acetone thing being mentioned but I also recall someone here tested it a bit and the two stratify and don't mix. Aerokroil is the best stuff I've found. It even impressed a good friend/shop owner with a stuck exhaust stud. He'd been fighting it (he's good at getting that stuff out too) so I brought a can, sprayed it, we visited for 15 minutes and it spun off quite easily.

I recall reading a method on a tractor forum. Penetrating oil on the cylinders, pull the pan, jack the vehicle up, put a solid piece of lumber between a fairly horizontal rod journal and the ground, let the jack down. Gravity will do the work as time passes.

The big issue is if there was really much water in there, it'll soften the metal and wear away quickly. Happened to a friend with a diesel Rabbit. It sat over the winter and apparently condensation from the hood, dripped into two cylinders. He'd gotten it back together and running but it developed low compression. I started to hone and put in new rings and when wiping the cylinder out, I could feel a low, crescent shape on one cylinder. Determination was water sat in there, rusted and softened the metal then running wiped it out leaving a hollowed out area in the cylinder wall. It happened to a lesser degree, to the next cylinder too.

it is a
gasser engine from a triumph tr6, it has sat as most do for various
reasons.

the motor will turn, i tested using the alt shaft nut and only a qtr
turn, it was an easy turn.

some research suggests marvel though i remember the
vw site folks here recommending the acetone/atf to break down rust. i am in no
hurry with this motor so i can soak the cyls and turn, soak and turn in
gradually longer amounts oftime until some point where i feel it is ready for
starter assist, fresh oil and oil is getting to the upper portions of the
head.

i am still driving my 90 passat wag with 1.9 swap, this triumph interest
is an encore career father/son project and so....if anyone knows of mostly non
rusty parts or parts cars, in the midwest, i would have some
interest.
