Seems most likely to be a vacuum issue what with locking, unlocking and it works but after it sits, needing to do that over again. Hopefully soon, I'll connect my evac pump to the system and listen for a leak. Until then, of course my wife drove the car and all worked just fine. THANK GOODNESS!!

Actually, that is just a switch on the door lock that is not contacting. Same
reason as stated, they age, get corroded, and cease to tell the ECU where the
door lock is positioned, either locked or unlocked. Have to take out the door
lock to get at it IIRC, I don't think you had to tunnel in through the door
panel. If memory serves I think I learned that the hard way
too.

Loren, I had the same problem with a B4 and an old hand at the
dealership (yes, at the dealership!) told me to get out of the car, lock it,
unlock it, and get in and it would start. It did! He explained that the
"mini-brain" that runs the central locking and alarm is in the door, and that,
as the window seals age, they leak, and the water shorts out the "brain."

Good
luck,
Jamey

start the car (or just turn it off while sitting in it) then go to start it and
it won't! Pull the key out and the "alarm" starts beeping the horn. It won't
stop untid you put the key in the door, lock then unlock. The.n it will start
normally.
> My wife said the door locks' vacuum pump had been running on
recently. Can a vacuum leak be the cause of this? I never have figured just
how this alarm system is supposed to work. The only other thing we found that
sets it off is if you open the door, through an opened window, while it's
locked.
