I took the back axle off an A2 Carat, to GET RID OF THE REAR DISC BRAKES
and replaced it with a drum brake axle!
The rear discs are a lot fussier to maintain, only contribute about 10%
of the braking effort, and need to be attended to every spring.
And much more expensive to service, if you pay for it.
The pistons SCREW into the cylinders to enable the automatic adjusting
system to operate, and you have to UNSCREW them to back them off.
(Special VW tool # %@#$& required).
The groaning is probably rust build up on the discs from winter roads
(they rust twice as fast as the front ones) , and because of the
adjusters, can't back off as far when released. The sneaky rust builds
up, making the disc thicker, and the piston is a one way device, and so
can't back off to accomodate it, and then they drag, stick, and groan.
Also, if you are an infrequent parking brake user, the parking brake
mechanism is a nightmare for rust-up in winter road conditions.
Parking brakes need to be exercised several times a day, or, NEVER used.
Pull them on infrequently, and they stay on when "released".
Been there! Good luck.
