[Vwdiesel] not diesel, chain saw fix question

I (try) to keep a half dozen to a dozen chainsaws running when we cut out old trees. There are probably 5 or 6 screws holding all of the carb together. Under one of the end plates will be a couple diaphragms. Under those will be some caramel-brown goo most likely. You'll need to clean that out, get a can of carb cleaner and blow out every orifice with it., in the body and both end plates. There's a screen under the diaphragms from the inlet. Count as you bottom the H and L screws then remove clean out the holes then reinstall, counting bak revolutions from bottomed out. They probably have some anti-tamper covers you'll have to remove and can leave off. (they usually run and start better with the L screw out just a bit farther than before, especially after a good clogging). It may take two or three tries before it runs really well.
Get a gallon of 100 octane low-lead avgas and if nothing else, use it as your last fuel of the year. If any is left, in the jug or the carb, it doesn't go bad. We've switched to it nearly exclusively. Costs about double but nearly eliminates the day to day runability issues I was constantly dealing with. :-)

no.
If the saw has been sitting for a few months with old gas, it probably has
a clogged carb. My son put his mower away without running it dry, and I could
get it to run on ether. I had to remove the jet and blow it out with compressed
air to clear it. I put it back together and it started right up. Google how to
remove and clean your carb. The mower had a single “bolt” on the bottom of the
carb that was actually the jet. Small engine carbs are simple, so don’t be
afraid to dig into it.
