[Vwdiesel] accuracy of speedo/odometer/avg fuel economy and other tidbits

Ever since I purchased my 2015 Jetta TDI, I have puzzled over the apparent inaccuracy of the speedo/odometer and especially the AVG MPG display. Unlike my Grand Cherokee Ecodiesel, which is extremely accurate (by road test, GPS and math calculations) the Jetta is about 9.2% off. Speedo over estimates speed by 3-5 mph. Odometer has about the same error and the avg MPG is also overstated by the same 9+%. So finally, I made an appointment to take the car to the dealer. I spoke today with the head tech and explained my concerns. His response was very interesting: “If you want an accurate speedo and the other things, buy a Phaeton or a CC!” He said that the accuracy will change as the tires wear and “everything will average out”. He said VW aims for accuracy at ½ tire wear! Point is, don’t assume your gauges are correct, particularly the AVG MPG. I also asked about the recall and we all couldn’t understand why the 2015/16 cars were included in the holdback/recall since they have a completely different engine, emissions system and software from the previous models (09-14). Their response was “you know as much as we do right now! We are getting our information from the news also.” Just thought this was important enough to pass along. Hayden
